About

Welcome to the Flip Phone Webring! This is a webring for anyone interested in flip phones and all kinds of fun tech! Whether you use a Japanese Garaho, a Rugged Dumbphone, a Modern Foldable, or love the idea of the form factor, you are free to join!

A Brief History

Flip phones came about as the 1990s approached, evolving from bulky mobile bricks into pocketable and accessible clamshell devices. As the 2010s arrived, they fell out of use with the rise of touchscreen smartphones. However, since 2020, foldable phones have begun to make a comeback, largely due to what many see as their more playful and interesting form factor!

Although most countries moved away from clamshell designs in favor of touchscreen displays, Japanese manufacturers continued producing flip phones, as certain groups still saw them as cheaper and simpler to use. Today, many people also choose to use flip phones for their aesthetics or as a way to be more intentional about their digital consumption!
