What is Penspinning?
“Pen spinning is a form of object manipulation that involves the deft manipulation of a writing instrument with hands.” Like many skill toys, it is a hobby that takes a lot of time and effort, but not only is learning it rewarding, the culture surrounding it is nothing short of amazing too!
To quote my memoir: "Pen Spinning is a funny little hobby. It’s a unique interest with a lot of quirks, but I didn’t really understand what it truly meant to me. It’s weird, useless, and needlessly difficult, yet it somehow became a part of myself."

What is Pen Spinning and how I would start today
Although most of my readers are already familiar with the hobby, I think it helps to summarise for non-readers as well who are surfing the web! I first discovered penspinning around 2018 after watching Kuma Film's 'Epic Penspinning' video, and it was one of the coolest things I've ever seen at the time. It felt like those magical girl wands but like it was an actual thing, and it was also really accessible! After a near decade, I learnt about many things in the hobby that I’d like to share one day. Apart from defining and sharing approaches, I also wish to curate materials that can help one in the hobby here!
The process of SpinAwards 2025
It was many years ago when I watched my first SpinAwards and witnessed just how beautiful and diverse a hobby penspinning is. I never thought there was a day I would be able to edit for it, much less organising criterias, and timeline infrastructure! There are many many elements to make the operation functional, and I was able to exercise a lot of organisational skills! From atomising historical approaches, creating a base viable production, to communication with the different roles in the project, I wish to talk about every single aspect that made this event possible and how it can continue to improve!
Navigating current PS culture and communities
As of this blog’s release in Q2 2026, the two largest English Speaking communities are Spindys and Planet. Fenspinner also exists as an influential extension to the current culture but it is not open to the public. Each server and active community, whether it be JEB or VNPS too can have a lot of interesting dynamics and approaches to the hobby! I wish to detail the culture between them and where one’s preference can lean towards, alongside the past communities that I’ve experienced. This topic can be subject to future updates due to their rapid growth and potential for planned entity conversions among other plans.
The history of the Penstock community and Planet PS
The foundational membership of Planet Penspinning traces back to the Penstock Community, a server I made! Although it has grown to be a fairly nurturing environment with many events today, the environment it comes from was a very interesting place. This will be a story of how I accidentally created the largest Pen Spinning server, how it blew up several times and was restored, how dictatorships, rebellion, and liberation manifests, how I indirectly destroyed it, and how that community became named after a celestial body we know today.
Fenspinner and Pen Spinning
I wonder to myself if there ever was a community as controversial as Fenspinner. With members starting from OPSD, V01D envisioned something, but it has transformed into a thing that has likely evolved from even his own expectation. This was an era of moderation drama, an increase of polarisation between old and new spinners, and a lot of odd memes. It is how a series of events, whether planned or unplanned, transformed a strange meme into what some describe as a modern shadow government in the penspinning community, one that changed the landscape after WC22 and one that shaped the modern hobby for better or for worse.
A Showcasing and a history of all my mods
Despite how cheap this hobby is in comparison to many other ones, I can definitely say I’ve spent at least a thousand dollars in penspinning! It was 8 years ago when I first made my first mod, and all those years later, I’ve managed to accumulate quite a few. Mods reflect a spinner as much as their spinning does. This will be a history of my preferences, how mods influence me or how my spinning influences my mod, and little reviews of all the pens that I’ve tried! As much as I felt I reached my endgame with my Shower Mod, I just can’t seem to stop spinning BT mods either, yet I feel conflicted due to their limited colours! Mods can make our hobby so much richer, and I wish to adapt this to a video at some point as well!

Although it’s long overdue, it’s time for me to finally make an actual formal tutorial! For those that read my pen spinning memoir, you might be aware of the origins of the Shower Mod! Although it started as a mod specifically to practice with when I shower, it became just the perfect mod I could bring and spin everywhere, somehow being perfect to me in every way. It’s short and odd, but it’s really cheap and fun too!
Pen Modding guide for New Zealanders
Apart from my parts list in Google Doc, I want to make a more targeted guide for pen modding in New Zealand! It’s a small place with a small selection, but there are still a decent amount of possibilities and pathways to create and experiment here. I wish to talk about the different stores I tried, their costs, mods I made through only local parts, and my recommendations for new spinners starting here or those that wish to play around!
Editing a Collaboration Video
What makes a Penspinning CV memorable? What are the most important aspects in creating one? Collaboration Videos are heavily ingrained in penspinning culture and it was one of many things that made me fall in love with the hobby. It is an art in its full motion, an art that dances along with the tone of a scene, and a theme that takes penspinning into something truly beautiful for all and our communities. As someone with a really large passion in editing and penspinning while being moulded through its very culture, I wish to gather opinions alongside my approaches on how to edit a CV! I also wish to adapt this into a video in the future!
